Alliance Guardsmen SMG - WIP 2

Description

Just a quick tease of something new I'm working on...Plan on redoing the larger Guardsmen Rifle at some point, but until then...this.
Like many weapons in the New Haven-Verse, the SMG is magnetically accelerated.  Even though the weapon is small, it's still quite percise and like most other MAW (Magnetically Accelerated Weapons) the rate of fire is limited to semi automatic.  It will fire as fast as you can pull the trigger, but doing so will quickly overheat the weapon and cause it to break down much faster.  Common training stresses fast and precise single, double and triple tap hits.  In the hands of a skilled shooter, the SMG can be a deadly threat even when faced against opponents with heavier weapons.

It's probably larger than what we would normally consider an SMG to be.  Guardsmen soldiers are typically larger than the average human though and once augmented with synthetic nano-musculature, handling heavy weapons isn't as much of an issue.  This design philosphy is followed through with the Multi-Shot rifle, which while being used much in the same way any other human might use a shot gun, fires larger 20-30mm rounds...more like what you might see with an assault rifle's grenade launcher attachment...working on a round for the multi-shot that is a type of enhanced taser of sorts...it's designed specifically to seen a calibrated charge through the smart skin armor UN soldiers typically wear, so that large parts of the armor become instantly rigid for brief periods of time...that few seconds of immobility might make the difference in a fight...also, if the prongs of the taser round breach the outer armor and can make contact with the Smart Skin Body Suit (a scuba type suit that regluates your body temp as well as many other vital functions), it can disrupt the Suit's functions...this isn't immediately disabling to an individual, but it does require the suit to be fixed, requiring time and resources to be expended.  It's a small benefit, but a benefit none the less.

I'm thinking about making at least one larger heavy machine gun weapon as well, to help round out the Guardsmen arsenal.  I'm not sure what route I want to go yet...something perhaps like a portable gatling gun, or dedicated heavy SAW...or perhaps something a bit more exotic.  I still think man portable lasers aren't an option yet in my universe, but maybe some sort of larger rapid fire rail gun, or just a larger caliber rail gun...

Anyway, there's still a lot of work to do on this.  I started it last night and as of right now, I'm pretty happy with the general shape, still a lot of refinement to do though, details to add, second guessing to do....lol

Some more updates....haven't worked on this much this week...still getting over a nasty virus...laid me out flat.  It's passed now, but I'm still recovering.

Nice work on the SMG. 

As for something else to round out the Guardsmen arsenal, gatling guns are cool and all, but man-portable gatling guns do seem like something of a Hollywood/video game cliche.  Although someone with genetically enhanced strength and cybernetic enhancements might be able to actually use a man-portable gatling gun (unlike real life where the rotational forces of the weapon would probably rip your arms off, which is why the man portable ones in the movie have their fire rates significantly reduced).

I don't know if you'll have ship boarding sequences in New Haven but for some reason I've always thought that a flamethrower would make for a nasty weapon in those situations.  Less chance of puncturing the hull and all that.
